The sale and manufacture of BS VI non-compliant vehicles in India should not be allowed from April 1, 2020, as it would lessen environmental benefits to be accrued from using cleaner BS VI fuel, the centre told the Supreme Court on Monday.

MORTH issued a notification in the Gazette of India on 16 September wherein it is stated that the new emission norms are to be introduced in accordance with the timeline that was originally proposed. The notification also details the mass emission standards for BS VI.

In what can be seen as perhaps India's boldest move to curb air pollution, the government has decided to advance the standard for cleaner cars and leapfrog to Bharat Stage-VI emission norms countrywide by April 2020. That's one year earlier than the deadline announced last month.
