Announcing sweeping changes to Australia's citizenship laws, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull today unveiled tighter requirements for new applicants, a move that follows the scrapping of the 457 visa program for foreign workers.

Australia's parliament has passed legislation to strip dual nationals of their citizenship if they are convicted of terrorism offences or found to have fought with banned groups overseas, despite concerns about deporting jihadists.

Dual nationals who help terrorists could automatically lose their Australian citizenship even if they have never stepped foot out of the country under new laws introduced to parliament today.

Currently, according to the International Cricket Council's Player Eligibility Criteria, Ahmed will only become eligible for national selection on August 18. But CA said should the bill become law, and Ahmed obtains citizenship and an Australian passport before that date, he will immediately be available for the national side.
