Armymen Ambush

A top leader of Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland-Khaplang or NSCN(K) has been arrested by the National Investigation Agency for his alleged involvement in an ambush in which 18 Army personnel were killed in Manipur on the Indo-Myanmar border earlier this month.

Niki Sumi, the self-styled military advisor of NSCN-K, is said to be the brain behind the June 4 attack on an Army convoy in Manipur, government officials said.

Irom Sharmila, human rights activist from Manipur has blamed the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for the gruesome attack on Indian Army soldiers on Thursday morning. The Act gives the army sweeping emergency powers in troubled areas.

At the Thoubar village in Manipur, about 10 kilometres from the spot where 18 Armymen were killed by insurgents who ambushed them on Thursday, there is not a single soul around in a village of at least 50 huts.

The Bihar government has announced a state funeral for four soldiers from the 21 Bihar Regiment who were killed on Tuesday in an ambush by the Pakistani troops along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. A compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of each of the four soldiers has also been announced by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.
