BSNL (Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited) is a state-owned telecommunication company in India. Recently, at the India Mobile Congress, BSNL chairman P K Purwar said that the company will launch 4G services in December and then roll out the services across the country by June 2024. Now, the company is also offering a free upgrade to 4G SIMs.

Telecom regulator TRAI on Friday said that it has been receiving a number of call drop complaints from subscribers triggering the need to review existing quality of service rules to measure network performance at the district level and bring 4G-5G services also under its ambit. 

India's cabinet on Wednesday approved an Rs. 89,000 crore ($10.79 billion) revival package for loss-making Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) to help the state-owned telecom operator deploy 4G and 5G services in a market dominated by private players.

BSNL has started rolling out of 4G network with 200 sites, and after a three-month trial, it will launch an average of 200 sites per day, Union IT and Communications Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday.

Consultancy Services on Monday said a consortium, led by the IT giant, received an advance purchase order valued over Rs. 15,000 crore from the state-run BSNL for the deployment of a fourth-generation mobile (4G) network across India.

Renesas is looking to produce chipsets that the company is developing in partnership with leading software company TCS in India, according to a senior official of the chipmaker. The Japanese semiconductor company will develop SoCs with TCS initially for 4G, 5G telecom networks and industrial technologies.

Bharti Airtel on Friday launched its 5G services in three new cities in Kerala, bringing the high-speed network to Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Thrissur. The company mentioned in a statement that its 5G services are already live in Kochi.

State-run BSNL will use about Rs. 53,000 crore in upgrading its network to 4G and 5G this year as well as revamping landline network across the country, Union Minister for IT and Telecom Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Wednesday. The Government has announced a capital infusion of Rs. 52,937 crore in BSNL during the next fiscal year starting April 1, 2023.

Airtel announced on Friday that it had expanded the rollout of its 5G network to new areas in Haryana. Access to 5G networks will be available in Hissar and Rohtak, according to the telecom operator. Airtel previously rolled out 5G support in select areas in Gurugram and Panipat, as well as other cities across the country over the past few months.

BSNL has shortlisted a TCS and C-DOT led consortium for rolling out 4G network, which will be upgraded to 5G in about a year of placing the order under the contract.

Airtel announced the launch of 5G network services in Visakhapatnam on Thursday. The telecom firm said that it would roll out 5G services to customers in the city in a phased manner, while customers with compatible phones can now connect to the high-speed network at no additional cost until the rollout is more widespread, according to the company.
