Nehru Cup: How India won

New Delhi:

The title clash between India and Syria lived up to the expectation as it had all the ingredients of a cliffhanger.

Here is an account of the epic battle that was won by the defending champions - India.

The final match went into the extra time after the scores were tied at 0-0 at the end of regulation 90 minutes.

But that was not all. The summit clash went for the penalty shoot out after the two teams were levelled 1-1 at the end of extra time.

114th minute: India's Potsangbam Renedy Singh scored with six minutes left of the extra time. It was a freekick

120 + 3rd minute:  Syria leveled the score at the last minute. In the added time of two minutes, Ali Diab's header had the chances alive for Syria.

Penalty shoot-out: Blow-by-blow

It went more dramatic in the penalty shoot-out as 20,000 Indian fans were cheering for their team.

0-1: India's Climax Lawarence took the first strike and scored.

1-1: Raja Rafe scored successfully for Syria

1-1: Potsangbam Renedy Singh, who had scored for India in the extra time, failed to repeat the show as he missed the goal in the shoot-out.

1-1: Indian goal-keeper Subrata Paul got into the act and saved a goal from Syria's Wael Ayan.

1-2: Indian striker Sunil Chhetri scored successfully to give India a lead.

1-2: Subrata defended India's lead as Ahmad Haj Mohamad missed the chance.

1-3: India, on the other hand, extended the lead when Steven Benedic Dias scored.

2-3: Syria bounced back when Mousab Balhous scored for them.

2-3: India's Mehrajuddin Wadoo failed to build the lead.

3-3: Syria's Abdul Fattah Alaga struck to equalise the score.

3-4: Anwar scored to give India a 3-4 lead

4-4: It got tensed when Syria's Abdelrazaq Al Hussain made it 4-4. The match was just a point away from the winner.

4-5:Irungbam Surkumar Singh gave India a sigh of relief when his goal gave India an upper hand in the decisive moment.

4-5: It was the moment of glory and doom. A true test of nerve and goal-keeper Subrata Paul showed his metal when he deprived Hamzeh Al Aitounim from leveling the score.

And that was it! India won the Nehru Cup title and won it in style.
