- Breast tissue undergoes significant changes with age, especially during menopause
- Researchers analysed over 3 million cells from 500+ women aged 15 to 86
- Milk-producing structures shrink while fat cells increase and immune function weakens
In a new study, scientists have found that breast tissue undergoes important changes as women age, helping explain why the risk of cancer increases later in life. This study was conducted jointly by researchers from the University of Cambridge and the University of British Columbia. Over 3 million cells from over 500 women aged 15 to 86 were analysed, reported Newsweek.
This extensive research created a detailed map showing how breast tissue changes over time, particularly during menopause.
Important Changes Revealed
The study found that with advancing age, the number of breast cells decreases and their division rate slows. Additionally, changes occur in the tissue's structure that can create a favourable environment for cancer cell growth.
Pulkit Gupta, co-lead author of the study, explained that their research revealed that breast tissue undergoes significant changes with age, with the most significant changes occurring during menopause.
Additionally, the research also revealed that milk-producing structures shrink or disappear over time, while the number of fat cells increases and the body's immune system weakens. This may be why breast cancer is more common in women over 50.
Experts believe that these changes are part of the natural ageing process. Experts at the Royal Women's Hospital explain that breasts undergo various changes throughout a woman's life.
They state that these changes can be caused by pregnancy, breastfeeding, hormonal changes, and ageing. While most of these changes are harmless, any unusual changes should be examined by a doctor.
Hormonal Influence
This study also highlights the role of hormonal changes, especially those occurring during menopause. Declining estrogen levels are a significant factor in changes in breast tissue structure.
According to WebMD, it's normal for breasts to change in size, shape, and firmness with age. Over time, the loss of glandular tissue can cause breasts to soften and sag.
Changes In The Immune System
Researchers also found that the immune system within breast tissue changes with ageing. At younger ages, there are more active immune cells that recognise and destroy abnormal cells.
As we age, these cells decrease and are replaced by inflammatory cells, which may impact the body's ability to prevent early cancer.
Scientists believe this research could help improve future screening and prevention methods. Understanding these changes over time could help pinpoint when women are at highest risk, enabling earlier detection and better treatment.
