National Award winning actor Dhanush is back with a bang in ace director Selvaraghavan's Mayakkam Enna. Whenever he works with his brother, the actor in him goes a step ahead.
Mayakkam Enna, also starring Richa Gangopadhyay, is not just a small step, but a giant leap, for the talented and versatile Dhanush.
The director, who has for the fourth time tied up with his younger brother Dhanush after giving hits like Thulluvadho Ilamai, Kadhal Konden and Pudupettai, tracks an emotional journey in his own unique style.
Mayakkam Enna is revolves around Karthik Subramaniam (Dhanush), a passionate freelance photographer, who is ready to shoot events ranging from weddings to corporate functions or individual portfolios just to fulfill his one dream.
Karthik wants to become an assistant to Madhesh Krishnaswamy (Ravi Prasad), a world-renowned wildlife photographer.
Karthik has a group of friends whom he meet at regular intervals and at one such meeting, Karthik's friend Sundar (Sundar) introduces his girlfriend Yamini (Richa Gangopadhyay) to them. Karthik and Yamini hate each other initially as their ideas and attitude are totally different. But as they say, opposites attract and the two fall in love.
Dhanush has delivered his best performance till date. His myriad emotions elevate the movie to a great extent.
The scenes, especially those in which he is guilt-ridden, stand out. Richa Gangopadhyay makes a good debut in Tamil cinema and is likely to be seen in more films.
The film's songs are pleasing to hear and watch (all credit to cinematographer Ramji). Editing by Kola Bhaskar is crisp (the film runs for less than 2 hours 30 minutes).
On the flipside, the movie slows down towards the beginning of the second half. For a moment it almost looks like the director dithers on how the proceed further. But that's a momentary lapse and it can't stop us and Dhanush fans from enjoying Mayakkam Enna, which asks the viewers to 'follow their heart'.
Our Verdict: Mayakkam Enna - is a film with soul and worth a watch.
