Mr Ambani was followed by Dilip Shanghvi, founder and managing director of Sun Pharma. He got richer this year by $4.1 billion and has a net worth of $18 billion.
Wipro's Azim Premji moved up one notch to the number three position as his net wealth increased to $16.4 billion from $13.8 billion previously.
Pallonji Mistry, patriarch of construction giant Shapoorji Pallonji Group, was at the fourth place with a net worth of $15.9 billion.
Steel baron Lakshmi Mittal ($15.8 billion) slipped from second to the fifth place this year.
Hinduja Brothers were at the sixth spot with a net worth of $13.3 billion.
Founder and chairman of HCL Tech, Shiv Nadar was 7th in the Forbes list, with a net worth of $12.5 billion.
Godrej family ($11.6 billion) was positioned 8th in the list.
Chairman of the Aditya Birla Group, Kumar Mangalam Birla ($9.2 billion) was at 9th place in the list.
Sunil Mittal & family were 10th in the list with a net worth of $7.8 billion.
