Has India found water on the moon?

New Delhi: There are signs that India's maiden Moon mission Chandrayaan-1 has found water on the lunar surface before the project was aborted.

The credit for this much-awaited discovery could go to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3) on board the Chandrayaan, which has mapped 97% of the lunar surface.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is analysing this data and is expected to make an announcement soon.

ISRO chairman Madhavan Nair said: The mineral mapper that went on Chandrayaan-1 has done a fantastic job...has done 97 per cent coverage of lunar space. End of the week we'll have more information."

He said this had been one of the missions of Chandrayaan1-. "We have received data from various instruments. This data is being analysed. I don't think there is any exclusive conclusive output has come from that but I am sure within the course of a week or so we will have some information about this."

An announcement may be made by NASA on Thursday.

India's first moon mission was launched in October last year and was terminated on in August this year following a communication failure.
