Corporator writes to Chief Minister on shifting Arthur Road jail

Mumbai: Citizens residing at and around Arthur Road want the Central Jail there to be moved out of city limits, as restrictions imposed on the public during important trials have caused them inconvenience.

Roads near the jail remain barricaded and entry for the common man is restricted whenever an important trial takes place. Local businessmen, too, lose business because of the road closures.

Chandrakant Pugaonkar, the local corporator, has written a letter to chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and home minister RR Patil, stating: "With Kasab being kept at the jail, JR Boricah Road has been closed along with one lane of Sane Guruji Road. This makes life difficult for residents."

Pravin Gohi, a resident, said, "Taking patients to Kasturba Hospital, which is opposite the jail, becomes difficult when there are restrictions in place. BMC workers also cannot fulfil their daily duties in such situations."

Baban Juvekar, another resident, said, "The jail should be outside city limits."
