The Chief of Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, spoke of the uncertainty of modern times today, saying globally, challenges are now coming thick and fast, be it in terms of security or cyber warfare.
Speaking to students at the TRS College in Rewa, he said, the challenges in the coming days will be "instability, uncertainty, complexity, and ambiguity".
"You and I are completely clueless about what the future holds... What is Trump doing today? I think even Trump doesn't know what he is going to do tomorrow," he added.
"Challenges are coming so quickly that by the time you try to grasp an old challenge, a new one emerges," he said.
The armed forces, he said, faces the same challenges and more -- be it on the "border, terror attacks, natural disasters, cyber warfare or the new frontiers like space". There is warfare involving chemical, biological, and radiological threats, he said.
Speaking of the "information warfare" he cited the example of Operation Sindoor, saying, "As you heard in Operation Sindoor, Karachi has been attacked". There was much in the same vein that was "news to us too," he said.
But there was no clue about who was generating all this. "We, too, heard such reports and wondered where they came from and who started them. That's how fast and confusing things can get," he said. "In the scope of all these challenges, you have to work on land, sky, water," he added.
Speaking of Operation Sindoor, he said the self-confidence of the armed forces, mutual confidence and calmness were the qualities that were evident during Operation Sindoor.
"Other than gaining victory over the enemy, Operation Sindoor was to re-establish sovereignty, integrity and peace... It was the Prime Minister who said that it would be named Operation Sindoor... Whenever a daughter, mother, or sister applies Sindoor on her forehead, the prayers go to the soldier standing at the border to secure the nation," he said.
During the operation, the chiefs of all three forces remained calm, he said.
"They were always seen smiling. Our calmness gave people the confidence that they were in safe hands. The risk factor in such wars is very high... To minimise the risk, we countered every attack and even went 100 km across the border," he added.
