Public spending must be transparent: Hamid Ansari

Home worries on foreign soil. It seems the Vice President has had enough of charges of misuse of public money and corruption rocking his House.

In Prague, Hamid Ansari voiced a veiled concern against the spate of charges against public works and projects, hinting to the government that authentic audits of public money spent are a must.

"The manner in which public money is channeled for public purposes is changing. It's not the same what it was when the Constitution was created. Where the funds are going, the public through its representatives has a right to know," the Vice President said.

Ansari is the second-highest constitutional authority in India. He seems to have taken a public position against the amnesty enjoyed by public-private partnerships, special purpose vehicles and even NGOs against Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India scrutiny. With the Centre and state governments preferring these routes to carry out public works, there has been an outcry for making those who clear and spend public money more accountable.

"Anything in which public money was flowing out of the consolidated fund of Government of India should be under the purview of the CAG. If it is not so, it's a lacunae on which the government has to take a view," he added.
