PM holds meet to discuss handling fallout of Babri verdict

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday conferred with his top colleagues as Uttar Pradesh government sought nearly 50,000 central paramilitary personnel for tackling any possible law and order problem after the Allahabad High Court judgment next month in the Ayodhya title dispute.

Singh discussed the issue with Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, Home Minister P Chidambaram and Defence Minister A K Antony, sources said.

The UP government has written to the Centre seeking 485 companies (about 48,500 personnel) to be deployed across the state in wake of the judgement, they added.

The sources further said it is feared that there might be a law and order problem in the state in the aftermath of the judgement and hence the requirement of such high deployment has been sought.

The Centre, however, will take a final decision on the number of security personnel it can be given just days ahead of the judgement after a thorough study of the situation, they said.
