Central Vigilance Commission to soon submit its report on 2G tape scandal to Supreme Court

New Delhi: The Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) will soon place before Supreme Court a status report on the investigation into the 2G scam and on a recent controversial audio tape on the alleged collusion between prosecution and an accused in the case.

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) officials have recently met CVC authorities and apprised them of the on-going probe in the allocation of second generation (2G) spectrum to certain telecom companies in 2008, official sources said.

The apex court, which is hearing the matter, has directed the CBI to file status reports on its on-going probe into the case to the CVC.

The status report will also have details of probe in the controversial tape which purportedly contained the voice of sacked CBI prosecutor A K Singh and Managing Director of Unitech Sanjay Chandra, an accused in the case, they said.

CBI officials have suspected corporate rivalry behind the surfacing of the audio tape aimed at weakening the 2G case.

Unitech had rejected the allegations saying Chandra had never met the prosecutor in the 2G case outside the court or had any phone conversation with him.

The CBI had removed Singh from the 2G case after the tape recording came to light.

CBI officials have also quizzed Shahid Balwa, Swan and DB Realty promoter, an accused in the case on February 20 in connection with the tape scandal. Besides, some members of CBI prosecution teams were also quizzed by the investigating agency officials.

CVC officials have expressed "satisfaction" in the probe being carried out by the CBI in the matter, the sources said.

Hearing a plea for setting up a Special Investigation Team (SIT), the Supreme Court had on February 2 last year asked the CBI to file its status reports on its ongoing probe into the  2G spectrum allocation case to the CVC.

A hearing in the 2G matter is scheduled for tomorrow.

Sources said the status report to be filed by the CVC may also have details of probe carried out by Enforcement Directorate and Income Tax department officials in the matter.
