Terrorism, radicalisation and transnational crimes pose grave threats to each one of us: PM Modi at BRICS - BIMSTEC Outreach Summit

  • Geographical barriers and borders pose no limitations on those who wish to harm our societies.
  • In South Asia and BIMSTEC, all nation states barring one, are motivated to pursue a path of peace for its people.
  • Unfortunately, this country in India's neighbourhood embraces and radiates the darkness of terrorism. Terrorism has become its favourite child, and the child in turn has come to define the essential character and nature of its parent.
  • The time to condemn state-sponsored terrorism is long gone, it's time to stand up and act, and act boldly.
  • Those who nurture the philosophy of terror must be sent a clear message to mend their ways or be isolated in the civilised world.

PM Modi addresses the BRICS- BIMSTEC Outreach Summit

  • Together we represent almost two thirds of humanity. We are united by similar challenges and concerns.
  • There are many economic opportunities. We have shared aspirations for growth, development, commerce and technology.
  • Technology can bridge gaps and connect communities. It can also deliver services that make a difference in our daily lives.
  • Environment and disaster management are areas where we can work together.

India, Russia agree missile sales, joint venture for helicopters

India and Russia on Saturday announced plans to set up a joint venture to build helicopters in India, which will also buy surface-to-air missile systems from its former Cold War ally, as the two tighten their military relationship.

The pacts were signed after summit talks between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Goa, where leaders from the BRICS group of emerging nations are meeting.

Indian military officials have said the plan is for the joint venture to build at least 200 Kamov helicopters required by the country's defence forces, and is part of PM Modi's drive to build a defence industrial base in the south Asian nation.

The S-400 surface-to-air missiles are meant to strengthen India's defences along its borders with China and Pakistan, Indian military officials have said.

Citing active participation by India and China in BRICS despite differences, Chinese official media today decried West's "bad mouthing" of the five-member bloc, saying disagreements among the members are "minor" and cooperation is the norm.

"BRICS countries themselves are different in many aspects. China and India have lived with territorial disputes, but the geopolitical contention between them is mostly hyped by some ill-intentioned people," state-run Global Times said on the BRICS summit in Goa beginning today.
