7 run over by Shatabdi Express in Gurgaon

Gurgaon: Seven people were run over by the New Delhi-Ajmer Shatabdi Express in Heli Mandi near Pataudi in Gurgaon early on Tuesday when they were crossing the track, triggering protests by locals who surrounded the train.

Passengers say 1000 villagers are protesting on the tracks; several trains have been delayed.

The mishap took place at 7:30 am when the seven started crossing the tracks between Pataudi and Jatauli station, as soon a goods train passed the area and did not notice the approaching train.

"Due to the impact, the engine of the train failed and the locomotive came to a halt," CPRO, Northern Railways, Anant Swaroop said.

Angry villagers have surrounded the train. The train has been stranded for three hours.
Thetrain guard, the driver and the stationmaster have fled and so far noofficials have reached the spot to speak to the villagers. No policemancan be seen around.

However, there are no reports of violence.

The identity of the victims is yet to be ascertained.

An engine has been sent from Delhi to facilitate the train's onward movement.
