Breast feeding has for long been the undisputed "best" baby food. Recent research suggests that there might be more to it than what meets the eye. According to a latest study published in the British Medical Journal, prolonged breast feeding during childhood may contribute to increased risk of heart disease later in life. The study conducted by researchers from the Institute of Child Health in London, studied 331 young adults who had been breast fed during infancy. These participants in the age range of 20-28 years, were tested for the level of fat and glucose in their body. A history of their feeding in infancy was noted down on the basis of which the participants were divided into 2 groups – bottle fed and breast fed. Duration of breast feeding was noted for the latter group. The results of the study suggested that individuals who were breast fed for more than six months during their childhood, had stiffer blood vessels which obstruct blood flow than those who were fed for a lesser duration. Since all the participants were in a low age group, other age factors that contribute to increased cardiovascular risk were ruled out. The possible reason cited for this finding is that breast milk may cause early fat metabolism in infants because of which fats get deposited in the blood vessels during infancy itself. However, the researchers themselves admitted that the findings of the study are not conclusive and that it does not in any way undermine the importance of breast milk. Some of the advantages of breast milk are that it provides immunity against infections like no other substance can. Mother's milk is also believed to increase mental functioning in children. Breast feeding is known to impart a sense of security to the mother and the child making their bond stronger and thus having positive influence on the child's psychological well being. Critics, however, say that there are many other factors that need to be considered. The introduction of solid weaning foods has an effect on the child's nutrition. Till such studies are authenticated without doubt, breast feeding will be considered the best option for the baby.
