Ranveer Singh's exit from Don 3 has now turned into a legal dispute. The matter reached the Indian Motion Picture Producers' Association (IMPPA) after Farhan Akhtar and Riteish Sidhwani demanded Rs 45 Crore in damages over his last-minute decision to quit the project.
IMPPA had planned a meeting to discuss the complaint, but the situation became more complicated after Ranveer's father and representative, Jagjit Singh Bhavnani, met the producers' body on August 18.
Now, Ranveer's legal team has also opposed the monetary demand and questioned if IMPPA has the authority to decide the dispute.
Ranveer's legal team sent a letter mentioning that he did not have a formal agreement with Excel Entertainment, instead, they had only a Memorandum of Understanding [MoU], Mid Day reported quoting a member of the producers' body. He also submitted a formal defence countering the Rs 45 Crore claim. His letter also stated that IMPPA should dismiss the complaint as it did not fall under the body's jurisdiction, adding that only the court could settle the matter, the Mid Day report stated.
After receiving Ranveer's letter, IMPPA postponed the August 14 meeting. When the actor's father Jagjit Singh Bhavnani showed up, he was told that the meeting had been postponed, it added.
Ranveer's legal team submitted another letter that stated that Excel Entertainment had no grounds to complain and if Farhan and Ritesh want, they can take the matter to court, according to the report. It also said that if IMPPA passed any resolution, then Ranveer would take the legal route. Some people in IMPPA feel that he should face the heat for walking out of a movie at the last minute, the same member said.
IMPPA President Abhay Sinha added that both sides have now shared their arguments during the second meeting on August 18. IMPPA's legal team is now checking the issue raised by both parties. After reviewing the case, IMPPA will decide what action should be taken next.
What Exactly Happened
Don 3 was expected to begin shooting in the first half of 2026 but Ranveer reportedly quit the venture after the success of Dhurandhar. This, despite the actor preparing for the film in November 2025 by taking basic action and stunt training, paid for by Excel Entertainment.
Things changed in December when Ranveer informed the producers that he wanted to leave the film. His decision caused losses because the team had already spent money on finding locations abroad, arranging the crew, training, costumes, travel and set. The producers then demanded Rs 45 crore from Ranveer to cover these losses.
After Dhurandhar, Ranveer Singh will be seen in Pralay, which was recently announced as a zombie thriller directed by Jai Mehta, son of Hansal Mehta. The actor has already started shooting for the film and will be seen sharing screen with actress Kalyani Priyadarshan.
