About Alipurduars

The tea growing belt Alipurduar in West Bengal holds prime importance in general election and is reserved for the tribal community. Alipurduar will be voting on April 11. In 2014 election, the constituency had more than 14 lakh voters out of which close to 7 lakh voters were female. The Alipurduar constituency comprises seven segments-Kalchini, Tufanganj, Alipurduar, Madarihat, Falkata, Kumargram and Nagarkata. Except the Alipurduar seat, rest are reserved for scheduled caste and scheduled tribes. 

In the 2019 general election, BJP's candidate John Barla will be contesting against Trinamool Congress' (TMC) Dasrath Tirkey. John Barla is a former leader of the Akhil Bharatiya Vikash Parishad. 

In 2014, BJP was a close runner-up. Dasrath Tirkey won this seat by defeating his near rival Manohar Tirkey of the Revolutionary Socialist Party or RSP by a margin of 21,397 votes. Dasrath Tirkey garnered 3,62,453 seats. Mr Tirkey was MLA for three consecutive terms in 2001, 2006 and 2011 from Kumargram assembly. 

In the history of Alipurduar constituency results, for 37 years since its inception in 1977 till 2014 the constituency was dominated by the RSP. In this election, RSP candidate Mili Orao will contest from Alipurduar constituency. 

Gorkhas comprise 19% of the total population here. Almost 60% of the population in this constituency consists of tribal communities.
