Kanker Lok Sabha constituency is one of 10 Lok Sabha segments in Chhattisgarh, which went to polls in the second phase of the 2019 general elections, on April 18.

About Kanker

In the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections Vikram Usendi of the BJP was elected from Kanker constituency in Chhattisgarh. He received 4,65,215 votes. His closest opponent was Foolodevi Netam from Congress who received 4,30,057 votes.

For decades, Kanker was a Congress stronghold, a position that was challenged in 1998 after which the seat has remained with the BJP for 20 years now.

In the 1967 general elections, the seat went to BJS candidate TLP Shah. In 1971 Congress candidate Arvind Vishramsingh was elected from Kanker, in 1977 BLD candidate Aghan Singh was elected. Then in 1980, 1984, 1989, and 1991 congress' Arvind Netam was elected from this seat.

In 1996 too Congress's Chhabila Arvind Netam was elected from Kanker. However, In 1998, 1999, 2004, and 2009 Sohan Potai from the BJP was elected.

There are eight assembly segments under the Kanker parliamentary constituency. These include Sihawa, Gunderdehi, Kanker, Sanjari Balod, Antagadh, Keshlal, Dondi Lohara, and Bhanupratappur. 

For the General Elections 2019, Congress has fielded Biresh Thakur, while BJP has given a ticket to Mohan Mandav. Sube Singh Dhurva is BSP's candidate. After an impressive show in the assembly elections, Congress hopes to win the Kanker seat. The constituency is reserved for Scheduled Tribe candidates only.
