The KTM 390 SMC R has once again surfaced online through fresh spy images, reigniting speculation about its imminent launch in India. First spotted on Indian roads last year, the bike is now being tested with a surprising twist-a newly developed 350cc engine instead of KTM's familiar 399cc motor that powers the Duke, RC, and Adventure models. This downsized engine signals a strategic move by KTM, possibly to tailor the supermoto for Indian conditions while maintaining performance levels. The supermoto category itself is still in its early stages in India, making the arrival of the 390 SMC R a potentially game-changing moment for enthusiasts.
The bike is derived from the KTM 390 Enduro R, currently priced at Rs 3.54 lakh (ex-showroom). Unlike the Enduro, which uses a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wheel setup, the SMC R rides on 17-inch alloy wheels. This change is deliberate, aligning the motorcycle with the Supermoto format that blends track racing, motocross, and flat track riding. The smaller wheels enhance agility and handling, crucial for the dynamic riding style associated with supermotos.
Mechanically, the SMC R shares most of its components with the Enduro R, including the robust single-cylinder liquid-cooled engine. The 399cc version delivers 44.3 bhp and 39 Nm of torque, but the new 350cc unit is expected to produce around 40 bhp. KTM is unlikely to compromise significantly on performance, ensuring the bike remains competitive while offering a slightly different character.
Reports suggest KTM may initially sell the 390 SMC R overseas with the 399cc engine, before introducing the 350cc version in India once development is complete. This phased approach could allow the brand to refine the new motor while preparing for a localized launch.

Beyond the 390 SMC R, KTM is also working on a 500cc parallel-twin engine aimed at riders seeking a bigger step up from the 200cc and 250cc platforms. This new engine will help KTM challenge rivals like Aprilia and BMW in the sub-500cc segment, broadening its appeal among performance-focused buyers.
With the 390 SMC R, KTM is not only expanding its portfolio but also introducing Indian riders to the thrill of supermoto biking, blending versatility with adrenaline-pumping performance.
