On March 1, 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stone for development projects worth over Rs 2,700 crore in Puducherry. These initiatives span infrastructure, education, health, and mobility, aimed at improving public services and quality of life in the Union Territory.

During the event, the Prime Minister highlighted the growing importance of cleaner and greener mobility solutions, noting that electric vehicles are becoming integral to everyday life. He pointed out that in a tourism-driven region like Puducherry, electric buses introduced under the PM e-Bus Sewa scheme could play a key role in reducing pollution and enhancing sustainable transport.

Supporting this vision, GreenCell Mobility announced the deployment of 75 air-conditioned electric buses in Puducherry, comprising 25 (9-metre) and 50 (12-metre) buses. These buses are equipped with higher battery capacities and are specifically designed to suit Puducherry's standard and trunk route operational requirements. GreenCell Mobility has joined forces with EKA Mobility, for the supply and deployment of 75 cutting-edge electric buses in Puducherry. These buses will operate from the Mettupalayam Bus Depot, strengthening last-mile connectivity and enhancing the quality, reliability and efficiency of public transport services across key routes in the region.

Commenting on the deployment, Mr. Devndra Chawla, MD & CEO, GreenCell Mobility, said, "With Puducherry, we are reinforcing our commitment to develop sustainable public transport ecosystems across India's emerging urban centres. Backed by strong institutional capital and policy support, we are focused on delivering reliable, technology-led electric mobility solutions that cities and Union Territories can depend on for the long term."
