A Pakistani terrorist in police custody escaped this morning as he was brought to a Srinagar hospital for a routine medical check-up. Police indicated that an accomplice of the prisoner, Naveed Jutt, opened fire just outside the hospital. One policeman has died, while another is injured, a senior officer said.

The pellets have almost blinded him in the right eye, but that has not deterred 16-year-old Suhaib Nazir from appearing for his Class 10 board exams. He has, in fact, requested doctors to postpone his second surgery till the end of his exams.

Over the last three days, the Padma awardee and his team have performed 46 surgeries in Srinagar's SMHS hospital, where over 200 people are admitted.

Patients lying on the floor, crammed between beds - that's how the ophthalmology ward of Srinagar's SMHS hospital looks. Over the last 5 days, the hospital has received more than 100 patients with serious eye injuries -- all victims of pellet guns used by security forces to control protesters.

Once, the Shri Maharaja Hari Singh or SMHS hospital used to be super specialty hospital in Srinagar, which catered to nearly three thousand patients a day and offered top-of-the line medical services.

In a second such incident in less than 12 hours, an Intensive care Unit (ICU) in one of the premier hospitals in Kashmir Valley was partially damaged in a fire incident, officials said in Srinagar today.
