In Fiery Speech, Mamata Banerjee Takes On PM Modi, Sonia Gandhi

Targeting PM Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said since he came to power the whole country has landed in a mess.

Bamanghata, South 24 Parganas: A fiery West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee took on both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress President Sonia Gandhi at Bamanghata, on the outskirts of Kolkata today.

"Modi knows he can control Congress and CPM as they have skeletons in their cupboard but Mamata Banerjee cannot be controlled by him. Modi knows the Congress will be finished so he is supporting them now. He doesn't want any challenges which is why he is targeting me. Modi should know that no matter how many forces you send from the Centre you will not get votes here," the 61-year-old chief minister said.

Taking the battle to the PM's doorstep, Ms Banerjee said, "You should decide whom you want in power in 2019 at the Centre and vote accordingly in these elections."

Her comments came while campaigning for Abdul Rezzak Mollah, the Trinamool candidate who made misogynistic comments and later apologised.

Earlier in the day, Congress President Sonia Gandhi campaigned in Seerampore in Hooghly district and attacked Ms Banerjee. "The people of West Bengal are caught between two evils. On one side there is Mamata and on the other there's Prime Minister Modi. West Bengal cannot develop without coming out of their clutches," Mrs Gandhi said.

Ms Banerjee, who has stayed away from attacking Sonia Gandhi directly, minced no words today.

"The grandfathers of corruption are talking about corruption today? Why is the BJP taking 2200 crores from unknown sources? Congress what about 2100 crores? If you do it there is nothing wrong with it, but if I do it, it is wrong? Don't give us this nonsense. Sonia Gandhi should explain the source of 2100 crores before calling the Trinamool thieves. And the BJP too should do this too," she thundered.
