2 Killed in Clash Between Mob and Police After Girl Immolates Self
Hamirpur: Two villagers were killed when a mob - protesting against an alleged molestation incident following which the minor girl immolated herself - clashed with the police in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district.

Police said this morning/afternoon, a mob attacked the Biwanr police station to demand that a case be registered against the accused.  Eyewitnesses said they hurled brickbats, torched a police vehicle and seized some vehicles, prompting police to open fire resulting in injuries to three persons. Two of them later died.

Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident (when?) and the local Superintendent of Police, DP Singh, has been suspended. In Lucknow, Additional Director General (Law and Order) Daljeet Singh Chowdhury said a police inspector, Girendra Singh, has also been placed under suspension.

The 15-year-old girl immolated herself on Saturday after allegedly being molested by some youths. She was also beaten up for offering resistance, said the police. She immolated herself later, after narrating the incident to her family.

Police said the accused, Jitendra Yadav, has been arrested and family members of the girl have been detained.

The incident drew spontaneous criticism from the opposition parties, which accused the Samajwadi Party government of "failing to control law and order" in the state.

"The incident in Hampirpur is fallout of goonda raj in the state," Leader of the Opposition in state Assembly Swami Prasad Maurya told PTI. BJP state chief Laxmikant Bajpai said "Samajwadi Party goons" were involved in the incident.

Congress spokesman Dwijendra Tripathi said UP is the only state where criminals are patronised by a political party.
