Pak removes rangers chief over unarmed youth's killing

Islamabad: An army general commanding a paramilitary formation and a provincial police chief were today sacked from their posts on the orders of Pakistan's Supreme Court in connection with the shooting and killing of an unarmed youth in a park in Karachi.

Major General Ejaz Chaudhry, head of the paramilitary Pakistan Rangers in southern Sindh province, was removed from his post on the orders of the apex court, a military spokesman told the media.

Reports said the transfer was made after the government sent a letter to the army's General Headquarters with the Supreme Court's order for action against Chaudhry.

In a related development, Sindh Police chief Fayyaz Leghari was also removed from his post by the Establishment Division, Geo News channel quoted its sources as saying.

The Supreme Court had on Friday ordered the transfer of the two top officials within three days.

Attorney General Anwar-ul-Haq, the government' top law officer, yesterday said the apex court's order would be implemented.

Haq said the court's verdict in the case cannot be challenged.

"A review petition in a suo motu case cannot be filed on technical grounds," he said.

"However, Chaudhry and Leghari can file a review petition in their personal capacity. But technically, the suo motu generates no party so the government is not a party."

The Sindh government too dropped plans to seek a review of the apex court's order for the transfer of the two officials.
