Nirmala Devi wins silver in 48 kg freestyle wrestling

New Delhi:

Olympic champion Carol Huynh of Canada won the women's 48kg freestyle wrestling gold medal at the Commonwealth Games here on Thursday, beating home favourite Nirmala Devi in the final.

The Indian took the first point inside 40 seconds before a tense stand-off, with Huynh straining to turn her rival on the floor.

Huynh came back into the bout with an impressive leg-grab, grappling her opponent to the floor to close out the first session 3-1.

Devi, buoyed by the partisan crowd, went ahead in the second, turning her opponent on to her front for two points.

Huynh had cruised into the final, defeating long-limbed Odunayo Adekuroye of Nigeria and needing just 19 seconds to pin Fiona Robertson of Scotland to earn her crack at gold.

And she appeared to have strength in reserve as she finished off Devi, bringing her to the ground to close out the final, to the disappointment of the crowd.

Adekuroye enjoyed a comfortable third place playoff, dismissing South African Brumilda Leeuw 14-0 to take the bronze.
