The truck carrying USPS packages plunged into the Charles River.
A truck carrying United States Postal Service (USPS) mail flew off a 50-foot bridge and into a river near Boston, a video footage released by the police showed. The cops said that the driver miraculously survived and waited for rescuers on the broken front of the trailer.
The State Police Association of Massachusetts released the footage of Saturday's incident, which took place on Route 128, on Twitter. The video was captured by a surveillance camera at a nearby boat dock and showed the truck going past the guardrail, and down the icy Charles River.
The driver was unable to swim but climbed atop the partially submerged vehicle. "He was just saying he was really cold," Deputy Fire chief Justin Woodside told reporters.
He further said that firefighters were able to respond quickly because they were already in the area. Wearing cold water suits, the rescuers brought the driver to the shore. He was then taken to Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Doctors who evaluated the driver said he avoided any injuries in the terrifying mishap, according to NBC 10.
The Massachusetts Police later said that as they tried to pull the truck out of the river, it broke into half and the packages fell into the icy river.
The police added that postal inspectors were notified about the incident. They visited the site later on Saturday and the police said the inspectors will take care of the packages which were not recovered by the firefighters from the river.
The police are investigating the cause of the accident, which took place near the ramp from I-95 to the Massachusetts Turnpike. Exit 39 of I-95 remained closed for more than 10 hours following the incident.
