Taliban claim responsibility for Lahore attack

Islamabad: Baitullah Mehsud, head of Taliban in Pakistan, has claimed responsibility for the audacious attack on the Lahore police training centre on Monday.

Mehsud is alleged to be behind Benazir Bhutto's assassination.

Six militants were arrested and eight others were killed in the eight-hour battle to retake the facility just outside Lahore.

Monday's terror attack has strengthened Islamabad's resolve to fight the Taliban. Initial investigations had confirmed that the Taliban were behind it and Islamabad now says it has no choice but to fight them.

Lahore was under siege battling its second terrorist attack in a month. Heavily armed militants attacked the police training academy in Manavan, just 12 km from the Wagah border.

At least 27 people were killed in the gunbattle while 98 were injured.

According to sources, four of the attackers were killed in the firing by security forces while six terrorists have been held alive from the scene of the crisis.

The attack comes less than a month after the attack on Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.

A blast was heard and then eight to 10 attackers entered the training centre hurling hand grenades.

Parallels are being drawn with the recent attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore.
