Taipei (Taiwan): A doctor has said that Nora Sun, a former US trade consul and granddaughter of founder of Asia's first republic in China, has been critically injured in a car accident in Taiwan.

Cheng Yi-jen of Shin Kong Memorial hospital said the 72-year-old retired businesswoman remained in critical condition on Saturday following a chest surgery.

The granddaughter of Sun Yat-sen was born in Shanghai but spent her youth in Taiwan. She began a career in the US diplomatic service in the late 1980s.

She returned to Taiwan this week for the centennial celebrations of the 1911 Chinese revolution led by her grandfather.

She has said she returned to show support for Taiwan's recent efforts to reconcile with China.
