Dry land on wild fire threatens Los Angeles

Uniited States: Firefighters said on Wednesday they had partially surrounded a wildfire north of Los Angeles in the United States that has burned at least 30 homes and is threatening about 150 others.

The blaze 10 miles (16 kilometres) south of Tehachapi in California is one of two in mostly rural Kern County that have forced approximately 2,300 people to evacuate their homes.

County fire Engineer Dustin Allegranza said the fire near Tehachapi was 25 percent contained on Wednesday morning.

It has burned about 1,400 acres (565 hectares) of land, or more than two square miles (5 square kilometres).

The fire erupted on Tuesday about 70 miles (115 kilometres) north of Los Angeles and threatens the entire town of Old West Ranch in the eastern foothills of the Tehachapi Mountains.

"We literally ran for our lives, I forgot my teeth," said one resident.

Another said "I got my dog" despite losing all of his property.

Another fire in Sequoia National Forest has burned eight homes and six outbuildings, but no other homes are in immediate danger. It's about 15,600 acres (6,300 hectares), or about 24 square miles (62 square kilometres), and is only five percent surrounded.
