Cold wave wrecks havoc in Europe

Many parts of Europe are shivering due to an unseasonal cold snap which has gripped Poland, Germany, parts of Austria, scotland and wales.

Snow flurries are grounding flights and trapping hundreds of motorists.

Infact, temperatures in Scotland and Wales over the weekend reached record lows and were reported to be colder than the North Pole.

The icy weather has disrupted flights, with Scotland being the hardest hit region on Monday as snow played havoc at three of its main airports: Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Hundreds of motorists were trapped in their cars in Scotland and had to spend the night in a sports hall.

Heavy snowfall and Arctic temperatures also caused travel chaos in Germany, where 125 flights were cancelled at Munich airport on Monday and many more delayed.

In Poland many areas were covered in snow, causing traffic snarls and delays for commuters.

The unusual weather has been caused by high pressure over Greenland and low pressure in the Baltic, forcing cold winds from the north-east across Europe.

The cold spell was due to continue through the week, with more snow forecast for all parts of the UK.
