Nicolás Maduro Guerra, son of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro, has made his first public statement since the US operation that led to his father’s capture. Speaking at Venezuela’s legislative palace, Maduro Guerra condemned the US action and demanded the return of his father and First Lady Cilia Flores to Venezuela. Addressing the National Assembly of Venezuela, he warned that “if the kidnapping of a head of state is normalised, no country is safe,” appealing for international support and solidarity. Visibly emotional, Maduro Guerra called on supporters to stand firm as Venezuela pushes back against what it describes as a violation of sovereignty.
