Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and TVK chief C. Joseph Vijay is taking a major step towards formalising the coalition that brought his government to power. At a key meeting in Chennai, alliance partners agreed on the name 'Social Justice Secular Victory Alliance', with Vijay set to chair the coalition. Congress, VCK, MDMK and IUML leaders attended, while CPI and CPI(M) stayed away despite supporting the government. The move comes after Vijay's sharp attack on the DMK in the Assembly and amid calls from some quarters for him to take on a larger national role. With power-sharing, crucial bypolls and the future of the coalition at stake, the big question is whether Vijay can hold together this diverse alliance and turn an electoral partnership into a stable political force.
