Punjab Political Row Over Man’s Suicide After Alleged Police Pressure Over Drug Question

A political row has erupted in Punjab following the death by suicide of 50-year-old Gulzar Singh, who allegedly faced police pressure after questioning the government’s handling of the drug menace. Singh, from Sangrur district, reportedly consumed pesticide after being allegedly pressured to apologise for raising the issue with Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema. The allegations have triggered demands for an independent probe, while the case has also renewed scrutiny of Punjab’s fight against drugs and alleged police excesses.
