Nagapattinam district in Tamil Nadu is a hub for shrimp cultivation, with many small farmers relying on it for their livelihood. Farmers say the recent 50 percent tax on Indian shrimp imports in the US has already led to the return of 500 tonnes of produce, sparking deep concern among them. Struggling with rising production costs, and with the shrimp harvest just 50 days away, producers fear the new US tariffs will push prices down to rock-bottom levels.
