A political storm has erupted over the UGC's new anti-discrimination regulations aimed at curbing caste-based bias in higher education. The controversy intensified after the Uttar Pradesh government suspended former Bareilly City Magistrate Alankar Agnihotri for criticising the guidelines, ordering a departmental probe. While Agnihotri plans to move court and has alleged wrongful detention-claims denied by the administration-critics and protesting general category students have questioned the rules' definitions and potential misuse, even as the Centre assures the laws will not be misused.
