A massive anti-encroachment drive in Mumbai's Bandra East turned violent after authorities moved to clear over 5,200 square metres of prime railway land reportedly worth more than Rs 600 crore.
Armed with a Bombay High Court order, Western Railways launched the demolition drive in Garib Nagar - an area where encroachments, including shanties, markets and places of worship, had allegedly existed since the 1980s. But soon after the operation began, violence erupted on the streets.
