A Saudi diplomat being investigated for the rape of two Nepali women in Delhi left India last night under the cover of diplomatic immunity. With good reason, Nepal's envoy in Delhi has protested the flight and asked Saudi Arabia to ensure justice. Delhi has simply issued a terse statement saying the diplomat was covered by the Vienna convention and therefore Delhi's hands are tied. Women's rights activists, who have fought tooth and nail for stringent rape laws and fast trials, are up in arms, but can diplomatic immunity in these cases be circumvented or has justice been sacrificed at the at the diplomatic altar? We debate on Left, Right and Centre.
