In Maharashtra, Ganesh is arguably one of the most versatile icons of the Hindu pantheon. Love and devotion for the God is reflected in the 10-day-utsava. It is a festival that blurs the line between culture, religion and politics. For many decades, this festival has been an important part of Maharashtra's cultural calendar. It is time to revisit some of the rich compositions that are inspired from the elephant headed God. In Art Matters, on the occasion of Ganesh Chaturthi, we look at two rare compositions - one that comes from the world of Marathi folk and the other written by the Sultan of Bijapur.
