Bangladesh Interim Government’s Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus visited the Dhakeshwari Temple to review preparations ahead of the Durga Puja festival in Dhaka. The visit comes amidst concerns over safety of Hindus during the annual Durga Puja festival. The Dhakeshwari Temple is steeped in history. It's one of the holiest of the 51 Shakti Peeth where the gem of Sati Devi’s crown fell. The ancient Vigraha or stone murti (ancient idol) was relocated to Kumartuli West Bengal during the partition by the chief priest of the temple in a dramatic fashion as attacks on Hindu temples in Bangladesh increased. The temple is state-owned, giving it the distinction of being Bangladesh's 'National Temple'. It is the most important Hindu place of worship in Bangladesh. Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh was named after the Devi Dhakeshwari and is considered the presiding deity of Dhaka.
