Lack Of Access To Antibiotics Driving Spread Of Superbugs

In today's episode of India Global, Research has highlighted that limited access to antibiotics is fueling the spread of superbugs—drug-resistant bacteria. In many regions, inadequate healthcare infrastructure, poverty, and regulatory gaps restrict antibiotic availability, leaving infections untreated or improperly managed. This drives resistance as bacteria evolve unchecked. The WHO estimates 1.27 million deaths annually from antimicrobial resistance, with low- and middle-income countries hit hardest. Solutions include improving access to effective antibiotics, enhancing diagnostics, and promoting responsible use to curb misuse. Investments in new drugs and global coordination are critical to tackle this growing crisis. NDTV's Osama Shaab speaks with National President, Indian Drug Manufacturers Association Dr Viranchi Shah to discuss this and more.
