A powerful 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan, triggering a tsunami alert across coastal regions. According to the Japan Meteorological Agency, the quake hit off the Sanriku coast at a shallow depth of around 10 km, raising concerns of tsunami waves up to 3 metres. Authorities issued urgent evacuation advisories, with Prime Minister urging residents to move to higher ground and stay away from coastal areas and rivers. Public broadcaster NHK reported that waves could reach shorelines within a short time.
