Iran Protests Escalate As Economy Crumbles, Rial Hits Record Low

Iran is witnessing intensifying unrest as protests over a collapsing economy spread across the country. Demonstrators staged a sit-in at Tehran’s historic Grand Bazaar, a symbol of Iran’s economic and political life, before security forces used tear gas to disperse crowds and shut down the market. The protests come as the Iranian rial hit a record low, losing nearly 80 per cent of its value over the past year, triggering sharp price rises and shortages of essential goods. Violence has entered its tenth day, with at least 35 people killed and more than 1,200 detained.
