Iran Furious After Australia Grants Asylum To Women Footballers

A diplomatic row has erupted between Iran and Australia after several members of Iran’s women’s national football team sought protection while in Australia for the AFC Women’s Asian Cup. Australian authorities have granted humanitarian protection visas to multiple players who feared repercussions if they returned to Iran after refusing to sing the national anthem before a match. Tehran has reacted angrily, accusing Western governments of interfering in Iran’s internal affairs and claiming the players are effectively being “held hostage.” Iran has also alleged that US President Donald Trump pressured Australia to provide asylum, a claim yet to be confirmed by Washington. Australia’s Home Affairs Minister Tony Burke defended the decision, saying the country acted to ensure the safety and protection of the athletes. NDTV speaks to journalist Faris Hassan from Melbourne on the growing diplomatic tension, the pressures faced by Iranian athletes abroad, and the broader geopolitical implications.
