India is now home to the world’s oldest commercial nuclear power reactor at Tarapur and the world’s newest reactor at Kalpakkam. NDTV brings a unique perspective on this twin achievement by a country that endured decades of technology denial. India is showcasing nuclear maturity, from Tarapur Units 1 and 2, the world’s oldest operating commercial reactors, now 57 years old, to the newly commissioned Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam, launched just days ago. NDTV’s Science Editor Pallava Bagla spoke to Mr Bhuwan Chandra Pathak, CMD of Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), who said India has over 650 reactor-years of operating experience and a strong safety culture backed by meticulous operations. India now spans the full nuclear spectrum, operating legacy reactors safely while commissioning next-generation futuristic technology.
