21-year old Shyamu belongs to the Dalit community, and is an inspiration for many in this village of Dhoti in Agar, Madhya Pradesh. Shyamu was married off to Dashrath in 2005 when she was only 12 and her husband just 14. But Shyamu refused to go to her husband's house and instead stayed with her parents and continued to study. Today, she is doing a bachelor's degree in Arts, and is already financially independent. To support her education, she teaches students in a coaching centre and also works as an assistant at the local anganwadi centre.
