Explained | Indigo Flight's Narrow Escape: What Causes Severe Turbulence During Hailstorms
On May 21, an IndiGo flight carrying over 220 people from Delhi to Srinagar encountered a sudden hailstorm mid-flight, causing severe turbulence. The pilot declared an emergency to Srinagar air traffic control as the plane swayed violently. Despite reported damage to the nose and right side of the aircraft, it landed safely. Some passengers described the experience as a near-death moment.
