At least 17 people were killed in a stampede at the Chorebagan Sarbojanin Durga Puja pandal in North Kolkata on Saturday evening. Witnesses and police cited narrow entry and exit gates, heavy weekend crowds and pouring rain among the factors that contributed to the tragedy. A witness whose daughter and granddaughter were among the injured described the lack of lighting, a long queue and panic as people fell in the crowded area.
