Flagging grave threats to its officials in West Bengal, the Election Commission of India has moved the Supreme Court seeking modification of its January 19 order that mandated voter notice hearings at Panchayat Bhawans. The ECI said the venues have turned “violence-prone,” citing multiple incidents of vandalism and physical attacks on election officials during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. In affidavits filed before the court, the poll body said micro-observers and ground-level staff were forced to withdraw from duty due to serious safety concerns and urged that hearings be shifted to safer locations.
